Linda is 31 years old, single, outspoken, and very bright. She majored in philosophy. As a student, she was deeply concerned with issues of discrimination and social justice, and also participated in anti-nuclear demonstrations.

Which is more probable?

Most people (around 85%) choose option 2. This is logically impossible.

    The probability of TWO things both being true
    is ALWAYS less than ONE thing being true.

The description makes Linda seem representative of feminists, so we focus on how well she "fits" that category. We ignore the basic logical rule: the probability of A AND B can never be greater than the probability of A alone.

Base Rates: The Information We Ignore

Base rates are the actual statistical frequencies in the population. When judging probability, we should start with base rates, then adjust based on specific information. Instead, we often ignore base rates entirely and rely on representativeness.

Example: You meet someone who is shy, enjoys puzzles, and reads a lot. Is this person more likely to be:

  • A librarian?
  • A salesperson?

Most people say librarian because the description is representative of librarian stereotypes. But consider the base rates:

If 1,000,000 people each flip a coin 5 times:
  → About 31,250 will get 5 heads in a row
  → These people didn't have "skill"
  → They just got lucky
  → Investing them as experts would be a mistake!

Example 3: Medical Diagnosis Errors 🏥

Scenario: A patient arrives with a headache. The doctor recently saw two rare brain tumor cases (both started with headaches). The doctor orders expensive brain scans, even though tension headaches are far more common.
