Revision note (July 2026): This lesson previously taught LSAT-style logical reasoning β€” formal fallacies, deductive versus inductive structures, argument warrants β€” and claimed that material covered "roughly 60-70% of DAT reading questions". It does not. The DAT Reading Comprehension section is overwhelmingly detail retrieval from three science passages. The lesson has been rewritten around what the section actually asks, and the genuinely useful analytical material has been kept and put in proportion.

What the section actually is πŸ“–

50 questions, 60 minutes, three passages β€” roughly 72 seconds per question, or 20 minutes per passage including the reading.

The ADA describes the task as reading, comprehending and analysing basic scientific information. Three facts follow, and they matter more than any technique:

  1. No outside knowledge is required β€” or rewarded. Every answer is derivable from the passage. If you already know the topic, that is a hazard, not an advantage: the passage's claims are the only claims that count, even where they simplify or contradict what you learned elsewhere.
  2. Most questions are detail retrieval. "According to the passage, X occurs because…" You are being asked to find a sentence, fast, in text you have never seen. This is a search task wearing the costume of a reading task.
  3. The passages are long and the clock is short. Roughly 1,500 words each on unfamiliar science. Reading all of it carefully and then answering is the single most common way to run out of time.

⚠️ This is not the LSAT. Formal logical reasoning β€” naming fallacies, distinguishing deductive from inductive validity, diagramming argument structure β€” is not what this section tests. Tone, purpose and evaluative questions do appear, but they are a minority. Budget your preparation accordingly.

Question types, in rough order of frequency

The core method: map first, then hunt πŸ—ΊοΈ

Do not read the passage closely on the first pass. You will forget the details you read carefully, and you will spend your time on paragraphs that no question asks about.

Step 1 β€” Map (3-4 minutes)

Skim for structure, not content. For each paragraph, note two or three words on your scratch paper:

That map is the whole point of the first pass. You are building an index so that when a question mentions fluoride, you go straight to ΒΆ3 instead of rereading 1,500 words.

Step 2 β€” Hunt (per question)

  1. Read the question before you read any more of the passage.
  2. Find the keyword β€” a name, a number, a technical term, a date. Detail questions almost always hand you one.
  3. Go to the paragraph your map points at and read that closely.
  4. Answer from the text in front of you, not from memory and not from what you know about the subject.

Step 3 β€” Verify against the words on the page

For a detail question you should be able to put your finger on the sentence that makes your answer true. If you cannot, you are guessing from impression.

Reading the answer choices properly πŸ”

Wrong options on the DAT are not random. They are built, and they come in recognisable shapes:

⚠️ "Half right" is the one that catches strong readers. You recognise the opening of an option as something the passage said, feel the click of recognition, and select it without finishing the sentence. Read every option to its end.


Where analytical reading still earns marks 🧠

The minority of evaluative questions is still worth several marks per test, and these habits are what answer them.

Tone. Authors of DAT passages are usually measured. Signal words carry the attitude:

Critical "unfortunately", "fails to", "overlooks", "neglects"
Balanced "however", "although", "while", "on the other hand"

Three or more signals pointing the same way give you the author's stance.

Structure. Noting why a paragraph exists β€” presenting evidence, raising an objection, conceding a point, proposing a resolution β€” answers most purpose questions directly, and it costs nothing because you are mapping anyway.

Evidence strength. Occasionally you will be asked what would strengthen or weaken a claim, or which finding is best supported. A rough hierarchy is enough:

Systematic review / meta-analysis > randomised controlled trial > cohort study > case-control > cross-sectional survey > case report > anecdote

And the one reasoning error the DAT genuinely does test: correlation is not causation. If a passage reports two things rising together and an option asserts one causes the other, look for whether the passage actually claims that β€” usually it does not.


Worked Example πŸ“

πŸ“Œ The passage below was written for this lesson. The study, its authors and its numbers are invented β€” do not cite them.

"Dental erosion differs from caries in origin: it results from direct chemical dissolution by acids of non-bacterial source. Citrus juices, carbonated drinks and gastric reflux are principal contributors. Whereas caries requires bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates, erosion proceeds without microbial involvement, which is why it can affect patients with otherwise excellent plaque control. Okafor and colleagues followed 640 adults for four years and reported that participants consuming more than two acidic beverages daily showed 2.3 times the erosive wear of those consuming fewer than one. The authors note, however, that beverage consumption was self-reported, and that they did not control for brushing immediately after consumption β€” a practice believed to compound enamel loss while the surface is temporarily softened."

Q1 (detail). According to the passage, erosion differs from caries chiefly in that erosion:

  • A. occurs only in patients with poor plaque control

Why B: stated almost verbatim β€” "proceeds without microbial involvement". A reverses the passage, which says erosion affects patients with excellent plaque control. C is never claimed β€” a frequency comparison that simply is not there. D is too extreme.

Q2 (inference). The mention of brushing immediately after consumption serves to:

  • A. recommend a brushing schedule
  • B. identify a limitation of the study βœ…
  • C. prove the study's conclusion wrong
  • D. explain why erosion is irreversible

Why B: it sits after "however" and alongside self-reporting, both flagged as things the authors did not control. C overstates β€” "limitation" is not "wrong". A mistakes an observation for advice.

Q3 (tone). The authors' attitude toward their own finding is best described as:

  • A. dismissive
  • B. measured βœ…
  • C. enthusiastic
  • D. hostile

Why B: a clear result reported, then two caveats named voluntarily. That is the standard register of DAT science passages.

Pacing ⏱️

20 minutes per passage. A workable split:

If you fall behind, do not steal from the third passage. Running out of time entirely is far more costly than answering a passage imperfectly β€” an unanswered question is a guaranteed zero, and there is no penalty for a wrong answer.

πŸ’‘ Some students do better answering in passage order; some do better scanning for the questions with obvious keywords first. Both work. Decide which one you use before test day and stop reconsidering it mid-section.


Common Mistakes ⚠️

  1. Reading the whole passage carefully first. It feels responsible and it is the most reliable way to run out of time.
  2. Answering from prior knowledge. Especially dangerous for the biology-adjacent passages, where you may genuinely know more than the passage says. The passage is the authority here.
  3. Not finding the sentence. If you cannot point at the text that makes your answer true, you are going on impression.
  4. Stopping at the first plausible option. Read all five. The best answer is often the fourth.
  5. Missing the qualifier. "Most", "only", "primarily", "unlike" are the words that separate two otherwise identical options.
  6. Missing "EXCEPT" or "NOT" in the stem. They invert the task and they are planted deliberately.
  7. Leaving blanks. No guessing penalty. With five options, a blind guess is worth 20% and a blank is worth nothing.
  8. Rereading the same paragraph three times. If it has not yielded on the second pass, flag it and move; a later question often makes it obvious.
